Learn More About EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy used to treat trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and other distressing life experiences. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess memories that have become “stuck” in the nervous system using a structured eight-phase treatment protocol.
When difficult experiences are not fully processed, they can become stuck and affect thoughts, emotions, relationships, and the body. EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, tapping, or tones to help the brain naturally integrate these memories.
Many people experience rapid relief from trauma symptoms, anxiety, negative beliefs, and emotional triggers through EMDR therapy. Over time, memories become less distressing and often develop a greater sense of safety, connection, and emotional balance.
The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase approach designed to ensure safety, stability, and effective trauma processing.
1. History Taking & Treatment Planning
We begin by exploring your history, current concerns, triggers, negative beliefs and goals for therapy. Together, we identify memories or experiences that may be contributing to current distress.
2. Preparation
In this phase, we focus on building trust, emotional safety, and nervous system regulation skills so you feel prepared and supported throughout the process. This includes mindfulness, breathing techniques, somatic therapy, and parts work.
3. Assessment
We identify a specific memory to target, along with the emotions, body sensations, and beliefs connected to it.
4. Desensitization
Using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping), the brain begins to reprocess the memory so it becomes less emotionally overwhelming.
5. Installation
As distress decreases, we strengthen healthier and more adaptive beliefs about yourself, such as feeling safe, capable, or worthy.
6. Body Scan
We check for any sensations in the body and continue processing until the body feels calm and regulated.
7. Closure
Each session ends with grounding and stabilization so you leave feeling centered and supported.
8. Reevaluation
At the beginning of the next session, we review progress and determine the next steps in the healing process.
